Intel said to be planning 45nm Diamondville CPU for low-cost PCs

It looks like Intel's not done with its 45nm processorsjust yet, as Reg Hardware is now reporting that the company is set torelease yet another model, dubbed "Diamondville", that is apparentlyintended specifically for low-cost desktop PCs. That processor willapparently be part of the so-called "Shelton" platofrm which, amongother things, will be able to operate without a fan, meaning thesystems based on it should definitely be on the small side. The folksat Reg Hardware go one step further than that, however, speculatingthat the Diamondville/Shelton combo could in fact be the basis forAsus' forthcoming desktop Eee PC-- a possibility given a bit more credence given that Shelton isdesigned to work with 2 to 4GB of flash storage. Either way, we shouldbe hearing plenty more about it soon enough, as the platform issupposedly set for a 2008 release.

Intel will next year launch a low-cost desktop PCplatform, it has been claimed. The news comes days after Asus said it'sdeveloping a desktop version of its Eee PC ultra-compact laptop for a 2008 release.
Intel's platform is codenamed 'Shelton' and is set to centre on a45nm processors dubbed 'Diamondville', described by companypresentation slides posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC as a "purpose-built low-cost processor".
Shelton is being designed specifically for low-cost systems, butwill have an appeal to companies making thin clients, the chip giantreckons.
Diamondville can operate without a fan - a cost-cutting measure as muchas an attempt to get Shelton into small form-factor PCs - and will besoldered to the motherboard. Boards will be based on either Intel's own945GC integrated chipset or SiS' SiS671.
And here's the clincher that marks Shelton down almost certainly asthe desktop Eee PC's foundation: it's designed to work with 2-4GB ofFlash storage. That said, the chipset will also handle parallel ATA andSATA devices, and other peripherals through six USB ports. Early boardpictures show a single DIMM slot and one PCI connector.

有消息称，Intel针对低价PC产品的Diamondville处理器，原定在第三季度发布的，现在提前五月至六月上市。Diamondville采用45nm制程，首款产品频率为1.6GHz。值得注意的是，第二季度发布的Diamondville仅有单核心型号，但会加入类似Hyper-Threading设计，同一时间最多可执行两组程序，提升执行效率。
　　首款Diamondville处理器针对低价PC平台，型号为Intel N270，但是正式命名可能改为Celeron 230（赛扬230），频率为1.6GHz、单核心设计，支援533MHz FSB，内建512KB L2 Cache ，支技Intel 64及ExecuteBit技术。
　　由于Celeron 230处理器最高TDP仅4W，因此散热器可以采用被动式设计，不需要借助风扇也能散热，有助产品进一步微型化。现时已得知，ACER、ASUS、GIGABYTE及MSI已计划采用Diamondville处理器，推出低价PC产品。
